Tour description

Under Spaghetti tour takes you to a startling and unique space few people seek out - underneath the Gravelly Hill Interchange aka Spaghetti Junction. Famous (and infamous) across the UK, it’s one of the best known landmarks in the city. Its tangle of roads can strike fear into wary drivers and it often holds a dark place in the psyche of the city, but is this a misunderstood beast? Thundering high above our walking route are the roads of one of the UK's most complex pieces of road infrastructure. Below is an exhilarating space of canals, rivers, a park, a lake, towpaths, wildlife and street art. It may not be conventionally pretty, but this gritty, urban underworld has a unique atmosphere which you have to experience to appreciate. A must for photographers. Old canal architecture is strikingly juxtaposed with modern road infrastructure, much of it covered in street art. It truly feels like entering another world. Sometimes described as dystopian, the spaces created have provided the backdrop for art exhibitions, dance events and films. The tour explores the legacy of this extraordinary monument, now over 50 years old, the story of its construction, how it shattered communities and inspired others. The tour is around 2 miles and lasts approximately an hour and 45 mins. There are steps and slopes and some surfaces may be uneven and slippery. It is suitable for those of average fitness who can manage a 2 mile walk without the opportunity to sit down. There are no toilet facilities. Sensible footwear is required. The tour begins at the entrance to Aston train station on Lichfield Road (B6 7PT). Street parking is available nearby and there is a car park at Salford Park, less than 10 minutes walk away. There are regular trains from Birmingham New Street to Aston station taking just 7 minutes or it is a short taxi journey from the city centre. The tour ends near to the car park in Salford Park where you can linger if you wish, otherwise the guide will escort guests back to Aston station. The tour is delivered in partnership with the Canal & River Trust. PRIVATE TOURS are available at a time to suit you and may work out cheaper for a larger group, please enquire for more details - contact@explorebirmingham.uk
